Cherries

#
The cherry season starts in May and goes on until early July. After 1885, when the phylloxera plague destroyed the vineyards of El Baix Llobregat, the rural community, making the most of the mild Mediterranean climate, decided to grow cherries. That decision was a great success. It got to the extreme that during the Second Republic, San Climent was rechristened as the Llobregat Cherry Tree. Currently this area grows approximately thirty different varieties of cherry trees. There are cherries for all tastes: bitter, sweet, local and foreign. Their cultivation is concentrated in the districts El Papiol, Sant Climent, Santa Coloma de Cervelló and Torrelles. Given their versatility, they are used in both stews and cakes.
