Prat chicken and capons

#
Apart from the gall (cockerel) from el Penedès, in Catalonia there is also another species of native cockerel, the gall del Prat. It is also known as the gall potablava (blue-footed cockerel) and is one of the city's symbols. Its breeding area lies in the district of el Baix Llobregat. Since 1987 it has boasted the Generic Denomination of Quality for Poultry and Capons of the Prat Breed. Its most distinguishing characteristic, as its name implies, is the blue colour of its legs. Its meat is a dark, uniform colour, sweet and practically fat-free due to natural grain-based feed. The gall potablava cockerel is eaten grilled, roasted or served with a Catalan picada made with almonds, hazelnuts, sweet rancio wine, garlic, white pepper and saffron. The gall potablava also has a festivity dedicated to it, the Fira Avícola, which takes place in el Prat de Llobregat in December.
