DO Penedès

This Designation of Origin includes the area with the highest production level in Catalonia with more than 25,000 hectares, divided into three sub-zones. In the area of El Baix Penedès the vineyards stand out for being white wines. In El Penedès Central the xarel·lo and macabeo varieties are grown for making cava. Finally in El Penedès Superior the parellada variety is grown and is where the most renowned wines are made. The white wines, which are light and aromatic are outstanding. The rosés are fragrant and fruity and the reds are intense and light. They also make sparkling wines with an intense aroma. Two towns of El Penedès, Vilafranca del Penedès and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, are considered as the Catalan capitals of wine. This is where the most innovative wine cellars in the whole of Spain are found. They were the first, for example to install temperature control systems and stainless steel vats. Vilafranca is where the Museu de les Cultures del Ví de Cataluña can be found. Here it is possible to take a trip through the history of the wine that can be enjoyed using all senses: talks, exhibitions and tastings. The museum is in a medieval palace dating back to the 13th century. Some of the most well known brands included in the Penedès Designation of Origin are Antonio Mascaró, also famous for its liqueurs, Torelló, Gramona, Masia Bach or Segura Viudas.
