Montserrat Trail (GR 6)

A classic hike that takes us from Barcelona to the Montserrat Monastery through Collserola, Vallès, Llobregat, and Montserrat.

The GR 6 Montserrat Trail is a 57-km long long-distance trail that starts in the city of Barcelona, in the Horta Labyrinth, and ends at the Montserrat Monastery. The route runs through the Collserola mountain range, the Vallès plain, the Llobregat valley, and the Montserrat Mountain Natural Park. The route is signposted with the usual white and red GR markings.

The itinerary between Barcelona and Montserrat is a classic outing that can be structured in three stages, although there are also hikers who tackle it in a single demanding hiking day. During the route, we walk through the counties of Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental, Baix Llobregat, and Bages, and we can visit sights, such as the monumental tree of Pi d'en Xandri, the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Cugat or the Saltpeter Caves in Collbató.

The hundred-peak mountain

Montserrat mountain is one of the cultural, spiritual and religious symbols of Catalonia – a place where people go to see the shrine of the Black Madonna and the children of the choir singing the Virolai hymn. But Montserrat is also a natural park with its own personality: provided by the dozens of rounded needles that characterise its line of summits.
