Wine routes of Barcelona

Barcelona is the land of wines. More than 2,500 years ago, the Romans and Iberians cultivated vines to produce the favourite drink of the gods, a drink that has shaped the landscape and culture of the regions of Barcelona. Just a stone’s throw from the city, you can enjoy three DO (Designation of Origin) wine areas that offer such a wide range of activities and experiences that you’ll want to keep coming back to try them all.

There’s nothing to stop you from visiting the Palau Güell in the morning and having a picnic lunch among the vines... Sport, gastronomy, golf, hiking and mountain biking await you, along with some fantastic wines of course! Keep reading to discover all the secrets of the Wine Routes of Barcelona; you’re in for a few surprises!

DO Alella Wine Route

Just 15 minutes away from the city of Barcelona, a wonderful landscape awaits you, dominated by the hills of the Serralada Litoral (Catalan Coastal Range) Park and the blue Mediterranean Sea sparkling magically under the sun, which is out most of the year. Covering 225 hectares, the DO Alella area could be considered relatively small, but it’s home to some great wines produced by top-quality, family-run wineries that treat their product as if it were another member of the family. What’s more, the area boasts some exceptional Catalan modernist heritage and a natural setting of pine trees and paths to explore with the family.

Can you imagine travelling by boat and electric bike to reach a winery with Roman archaeological remains? The Alella Wine Route offers plenty of activities for exploring the destination. On top of this, you can combine the flavour of the finest pansa blanca white wines with the farmers’ markets, concerts, yoga classes and diverse culinary activities that are held throughout the year in the area’s towns and wineries.

DO Pla de Bages Wine Route

Set in the heart of Catalonia, an array of treasures await you amid the grapevines. A project is underway to restore wine vats and other dry-stone constructions which, nestled in forests, were used over the decades for the storage and production of wine in the Bages region.

History, landscape and heritage join forces to draw you into a world that offers something for everyone. From accommodation establishments set in nature to walking, cycling and horse riding trails, along with 16 wineries run by cooperatives with more than a hundred years of history and winemakers stretching back many generations. They produce wines with a unique aroma under the watchful gaze of Montserrat Mountain and the Geoparc, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Any time is a good time to enjoy the DO Pla de Bages Wine Route, but the Bages Wine Festival in June, and the Wine Harvest Festival in October make it an extra special experience.

Penedès Wine Route

The Penedès Wine Route is located amid the 24,000 hectares of the well-known DO Penedès area, where you’ll find a remarkably wide range of both wines and cavas. In addition to the Cava Centre, Vinseum and other museums for curious minds, the area boasts 75 wineries of different sizes that offer all sorts of activities, including walking, cycling and motorhome routes among vineyards that you can enjoy at your own pace. Make the most of some amazing lookout points, sustainable activities with organic wines or visits with special vehicles. You can even organize the event of your dreams in this corner of the world.

It doesn’t really matter what time of year you decide to visit, because there’s a year-round, jam-packed schedule of traditional celebrations and festivals, such as the Phylloxera Festival, which you have to experience at least once in your life. Live, taste and feel the DO Penedès area, where rolling acres of vineyards change colour with the seasons. Enjoy this landscape and its unmistakeable aroma.
