Capellades, a town of stone, paper and water
The abundance of water is one of the defining features of Capellades, a town nestling on the right bank of the Anoia River. Water carved escarpments where Neanderthals lived in prehistoric times. Much later, from the 17th century onwards, several paper mills were built along the river to take advantage of the plentiful flow of water. Still today, the same water attracts many visitors, keen to discover the wells, springs, lavoirs and reservoirs spread throughout this medium-sized town. Do you know the main attractions of one of the unmissable tourist destinations in Barcelona’s counties?
1. The reservoir
The reservoir is one of the natural upwelling points of the aquifer that sits beneath the counties of Alt Penedès and Anoia. They say that 12 million litres of water a day flow from this spring, which must be true, judging from the enormous size of this tank built in the open air.
2. Capellades Paper Mill Museum
Next to the reservoir, the Paper Mill Museum gives you the chance to find out why Capellades became one of the leading hubs of papermaking in the 18th and 19th centuries. You can also learn the artisanal production process of this hugely importantly material, as well as having the opportunity to put your own hands to the test making paper with tools and machinery from the preindustrial period.
3. An old town with a lot of water
The traditional streets of this town in the county of Anoia are full of features that remind us of the constant presence of water: the Corronaire Canal, the public lavoir, the Carquinyoli spring and the Cuitora Spring Park, one of the most iconic landmarks of Capellades.
4. NEAN - Capellades Prehistoric Park
Are you interested in prehistory? At the Capelló Escarpment, be sure to visit the NEAN - Capellades Prehistoric Park, where you can discover around twenty archaeological sites from a range of different periods, set against a very beautiful natural backdrop. Particularly interesting are the excavations under way at the Abric Romaní site, where neanderthals settled between 120,000 and 40,000 years ago, as the findings are shedding light on what they were like and how they lived.
- But there is more to Capellades than just water. On the second Sunday of Lent, the town hosts the famous Capellades Fig Market.
