Kids in the world of grapes

Set between the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range and the Mediterranean coast, the DO (Designation of Origin) Penedès is an outstanding winegrowing area with the largest production yield in Catalonia. The quality of the soil, the sun exposure and the sea breeze go a long way to explaining the success of wines and cavas capable of surprising even the most demanding of palates. The region also has the largest number of wineries, along with a wide-ranging wine tourism offering that you can also enjoy with the family.

Segura Viudas is one of the first wineries in the DO Penedès region to realise the importance of organising tourist activities suitable for the youngest members of the family. So, a while back, it launched its hearty farmer’s welcome breakfast at the farmhouse, which will give you all the energy you need for the day's activities: a nature walk through the vineyard, a bird-watching workshop, or a session observing the biodiversity of the river that runs alongside the estate. Back at the farmhouse, a tasting of grape juice, wine and cava puts the finishing touch on a fabulous morning at the famous Torrelavit winery.

Another winery in the region that’s delighted to welcome families is Can Nadal de la Boadella. Visits to this historic estate in Pla del Penedès include a tour of the vineyard, the winery and the cava cellars, as well as a fun and exciting treasure hunt that introduces kids to the world of wine. Both adults and children get to round off the activity with a truly delightful pairing: chocolate for everyone, accompanied by grape juice for the kids and cava for the grown-ups.

In the municipality of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Caves Vilarnau also offers the chance to spend a family day among the vineyards. While parents take the guided tour, kids are accompanied around the estate by a specialised guide who explains the winemaking and cava-making process in a fun, engaging way. Afterwards, they get to take part in a cork, label and bottle cap recycling workshop, followed by a helping of snacks, washed down with the estate's finest grape juice.

The star activities at Cava Guilera are held during the grape harvest. September is usually the ideal month to join in a tasting of around twenty grape varieties organised by the owners of this Subirats winery, right next to the vineyard. You’ll experience new aromas, acidities and sweetness, and find out how flavours change at different stages of ripeness. Then you’ll pick some grapes, make grape juice with a manual press, and, if you fancy, you can even crush grapes with your feet. It’s a truly special way to immerse yourself in the world of winemaking, and the kids will absolutely love it!
