How to get to the Colònia Güell model village and visit the Gaudí Crypt

If you’re committed to sustainable tourism, then using environmentally-friendly public transport should always be a priority. But if the place you want to visit is listed as a World Heritage Site, the responsibility of preserving it for future generations is even greater. The Gaudí Crypt is a prime example.

Located in the municipal district of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, just 20 km from Barcelona, the church that Antoni Gaudí designed for the Colònia Güell model village is an architectural jewel of Catalan modernism and one of his best-known works. Every year it’s visited by thousands of people eager to experience the beauty and complexity of a space conceived of as a stone organism that blends in with its setting. And we’d be betraying the spirit of the genius of the three-dimensional approach if we didn’t attempt to reduce the negative impact caused by large visitor numbers at a site of this nature. So if you love nature as much as Gaudí did, leave your car behind and head to the Colònia Güell by train, which is currently the most straightforward and environmentally-friendly option for getting there from Barcelona.

All you need to do is make your way to the Barcelona-Plaça Espanya Station of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC), the Catalan Government rail network, and take any train on lines S3, S4, S8 and S9. There’s a train every ten minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes at weekends and on public holidays, which means you won’t have to wait for very long. The journey takes around 25 minutes, so just relax and enjoy the views. Get off at “Colònia Güell” Station (yes, the most famous model village in the regions of Barcelona has its own railway station). Once there, all you have to do is follow the blue footprints on the ground, which before you know it will have led you to the Visitor Centre, where you can explore the permanent exhibition, buy your tickets to enter the Gaudí Crypt or book a guided tour of the most unusual buildings of a unique complex. See times and prices on the Colònia Güell website.

  • Did you know that by travelling by railway you’re helping to combat climate change, improve air quality, reduce road traffic and lessen the risk of having an accident? What’s more, you save money. Check the result of your journey on the EcoCalculator of FGC and you’ll see that for each 10 km you cover by train instead of using the car, you save 1.6 kg of CO2 emissions. If you don’t want to contribute to climate change, get around by train!
