Children in grapes country

Situated between the pre-coastal range and the Mediterranean, the Penedès Denomination of Origin region is a prime location for growing grapes, so much so that it produces most of the wine that comes from Catalonia. The quality of the land, the influence of the sun and the sea breeze explain much of the success of wines and cavas that are capable of surprising the most demanding of connoisseurs. The Penedès DO also has the largest number of wineries and the widest range of wine tourism activities, which can now be enjoyed by the whole family.

Segura Viudas is one of the first wineries in the Penedès DO region to understand the importance of organising activities that children can also enjoy. What they now do is welcome families to the estate with a good farmers' breakfast to provide the energy needed for the activities that follow: a nature walk through the vineyards, an ornithology workshop and a session to observe the biodiversity of the river that borders the estate. Then, back at the farmhouse, there is grape juice, wine and cava tasting to round off an excellent morning at the famous Torrelavit winery.

Another winery in the region that is delighted to welcome families is Can Nadal de la Boadella. Visits to this historic estate in Pla del Penedès include a tour of the vineyard, winery and cellars, plus an exciting treasure hunt for children to discover the world of wine in a fun way. Both young and old then finish off the visit by pairing chocolate with grape juice and cava – a real treat.

In the municipality of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Caves Vilarnau also offers the possibility of spending a family day among the vines. While the parents do the guided tour, the children explore the vineyard with a qualified instructor who explains in a fun way how wine and cava are made. They then participate in a workshop for recycling corks, caps and labels, followed by snacks, washed down with the estate's very best grape juice.

To participate in one of the fantastic activities organised by Cava Guilera, you will need to wait until harvest time comes. September is the ideal time for signing up to taste twenty or so varieties of grape in the vineyard, organised by the owners of the Subirats winery. You will experience new aromas, sweetnesses and acidities, and compare how flavours change at different stages of maturation. You will then pick some bunches and make grape juice with a manual press and, if you want, do some grape treading in your bare feet. A different way to learn about grape growing that will delight your children!
