Step by step

Disconnect from work. Get off the sofa. Hide your mobile … Look! A short distance from Barcelona, there are 16 natural parks, where you can go to enjoy the countryside. Characterised by iconic mountains, forests of pine and oak, summits overlooking the Mediterranean and quiet valleys, you are sure to find an inviting setting for you to slip on your walking boots and hang up your backpack. Welcome to hiker's paradise!

If you are the kind of person who likes to explore the countryside step by step without haste, you will be delighted with the extensive network of marked footpaths available to you in the regions of Barcelona. With very different degrees of difficulty, distances and scenery, you can choose the one that best suits your level of fitness, tastes and interests.

The best-known long trails include the Three Mountains – a journey of 106 kilometres which, over six stages, links the natural parks of Montseny, Montserrat and Sant Llorenç del Munt and Obac. The Way of the Good Men is the preferred choice for walkers with an interest in history, since it follows the paths used by the ancient Cathars between the Sanctuary of Queralt in Berga and the Château de Montségur in the French department of Ariège. The GR-5 trail is perfect for lovers of flora and fauna, as this long-distance footpath links natural parks characterised by their incredible biodiversity, while worshipers of Neptune thoroughly enjoy the GR-92 Mediterranean coastal trail – a path that runs along the coast and passes through the parks of Montnegre and Corredor, Serralada Litoral, Serralada Marina, Serra de Collserola and Garraf.

If you prefer shorter breaks, find out about the guided walks organised by the natural parks themselves on an annual basis, which take no longer than four hours, but are ideal for discovering very interesting places. Also, as these are led by environmental educators, who are very familiar with the terrain, it is impossible to get lost. Sounds good, right? Well, get your walking boots on then!
