Breathe in the fresh air of the Vallès region
Just like the Gaulish village of Asterix and Obelix, Gallecs has bravely withstood the urban development onslaught of its immediate surroundings. Located in the municipal district of Mollet, the core of the old landscape around the old village has remained unaltered since the Middle Ages, with farmhouses scattered among crop fields and forests. In the 1970s, with the country still under Franco’s rule, there were plans to build a large dormitory town here. The project never came to fruition thanks to the efforts of local residents. The conflict ended in 2005 when the Gallecs area was granted permanent protection.
Leisure, nature and culture
Gallecs embodies the landscape of the Vallès plain and the equilibrium between humans and nature. Life is dictated by the seasons in this part of the world. They determine the ever-changing kaleidoscope of colours in the landscape, the crop cycles and the human activity that goes on. In recent years, Gallecs has become a magnet for runners, walkers and nature lovers in general. There are various signposted routes to complete on foot or by bike, offering a great way to enjoy the landscape and local wildlife, especially the birds that migrate to the area. The Church of Santa Maria de Gallecs, located in the centre of the area, preserves its pure Romanesque style. It can be visited as part of the Hidden Romanesque Churches of the Baix Vallès Route.
Fresh, natural and in season
Gallecs is a little haven for agriculture. In addition to cereal crops, you’ll find plenty of seasonal vegetables. Make sure you don’t miss the Catalan green onions (calçots) in winter. Organic farming is becoming increasingly important and the products of Gallecs hold the Catalan Council of Organic Production (CCPAE) seal. In the farm shop you’ll find ancient wheat crops that are making a comeback, such as spelt, pulses such as the mongeta del ganxet (white kidney bean) or the baby chickpea, seasonal vegetables and products manufactured by local farmers and artisans (jams and preserves).
