A green and blue landscape

With a coastline of 40 kilometres, it is easy to see why everything in Maresme revolves around the sea. And not only in the region's name (mar means 'sea' in Catalan): its architectural, culinary and natural heritage is also marked by the ceaseless crashing of the waves. Get ready, then! In this part of the world, passion does not hide behind masks.

Well-established as one of Costa Barcelona's most important tourist destinations, the golden sandy beaches are the most seductive attraction of Maresme region. Some are wide and long, such as those of Calella and Santa Susanna, while others are smaller and hidden away, as at la Vinyeta and Roca Grossa. Many have been awarded the Blue Flag and are perfect for nautical activities. Yachting, kayaking, surfing, scuba-diving, the region's marinas, clubs and specialist centres all offer an unbeatable range of options!

Gastronomy is another of the county's strengths. And the Mediterranean's magnificent fishing, combined with the best market garden produce, results in a mosaic of aromas, colours and flavours that can be sampled in many of the area's restaurants. In fact, one of Spain's few three-Michelin-star establishments is to be found in Sant Pol de Mar. Chef Carme Ruscalleda's Sant Pau is an obligatory visit for those who love fine food.

Maresme is also home to a number of the best-conserved of the Modernism movement's buildings. In Mataró, for example, one can visit works by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Puig i Cadafalch; while, in Canet de Mar, the summer residence of architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner awaits you, now turned into a fascinating museum. If you want to find out what life was like in a Modernist villa, join the guided tour offered by the town. You won't regret it!

  • Four towns in Maresme have been named ‘Family Tourism Destinations' because they take a particular interest in the needs of the little ones. Do you know which they are?
