Enjoying wine and jazz

Located very near Barcelona, the region of Alt Penedès has so many attractions that you could visit it every weekend. Endless landscapes of vineyards. Sprawling modernist wineries. Magical places like the mountain of Olèrdola. Iconic Republican aerodrome shelters dating back to the Spanish Civil War. But if you love jazz and wine, take a trip to the lands of the Xarel·lo grape in the first weekend of July, when Vilafranca del Penedès hosts Vijazz – a festival that will thrill you.

Vijazz is an innovative event that, for three days, combines wine culture with a programme of free concerts given by internationally-renowned jazz musicians. A curious pairing that works perfectly and attracts a larger audience every year.

One of the main attractions of the festival is the large fair that fills Rambla Nostra Senyora, one of the town's main streets, with the best wines and cavas from the wineries of the Penedès Denomination of Origin. Many of them take advantage of the event to present new vintages, products and label and box designs, and the most radical participate in Wine Punk Vijazz – an informal gathering held in the beautiful Chapel of Saint John, where products that are not marketed and experimental wines are presented.

As for the international jazz festival, around 10 concerts fill the two stages located in the centre of Vilafranca with music. The majestic James I Square and Rambla Sant Francesc have seen the likes of pianists Michel Camilo and Chick Corea, the bassist Avishai Cohen, the singer Gregory Porter, the saxophonist Branford Marsalis and the bass player Victor Wooten. Listening to the greats of jazz under the stars with a glass of fine wine in the hand is a pleasure that you will never forget. Cheers!
