Can Negre

Josep Maria Jujol, famous in Sant Joan Despí for having built the la Creu tower, decided to completely transform the building. So, loyal to the premises of Modernism, he created a magical, Baroque and imaginative atmosphere to both the inside and outside of the building. Jujol designed and decorated a completely new façade, created an undulating roof and designed the central balcony from from the symbolic image of a carriage. Inside the floors are connected with an octagonal staircase topped by a suspended angel and walls adorned with designs and motifs in striking colours such as blues, reds and golds. Outside Jujol incorporated wrought-iron (also present inside) designing a pergola and decorating the seats with ceramics. Finished in 1930 following fifteen years of work, the result is a unique building that combines, in perfect harmony, the ancestoral spirit and architectural modernity.
