Vins El Cep

This project was begun in 1980 when the Carreras, Masana, Parera and Esteve families decided to join forces. Since then, the company has directed its combined energies at creating quality wines and cavas. Vins El Cep Winery is on Can Llopart de les Alzines Estate, on the outskirts of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. In addition, the company has four other estates in Sant Llorenç d'Hortons (Can Prats and Can Simon) and Gelida (Can Castany and Can Miquel de les Planes). In all, they amount to 200 hectares of vineyards planted with the native white varieties Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada and the much appreciated Chardonnay and the reds Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. From this raw material emerges a product line with various brands: Marquès de Gelida, L'Alzinar, Claror and MIM Natura. The most renowned international critics have praised the winery's excellent cava. Visits to Vins El Cep recall a viticulture tradition dating back to the 15th century. This long tradition contrasts with the modernity of the vinification room and El Cep cellars. The building has two faces: the old exposed-brick part, with lots of character, is the heir of the old farmhouse built in the 16th century and added to in the 17th century; the modern elegant part, made of iron and dark glass, was built in 2005. The tour of the winery begins in the vineyards, easily accessed from in front of the facility itself. From this elevated spot in the region of Espiells, guests can enjoy magnificent views of Penedès and Montserrat mountain. Once inside the cellar, the tour tracks the winemaking and cava-making process, from the entry of the grape to the bottling stage. This is complemented by explanations of the winery's philosophy. There is no better way to end the visit than with a glass of cava. In addition, guests can sample different products while a wine expert sheds insight on what they are tasting. As added value, from Vins El Cep one can set out on walking or bike tours to Espiells hermitage or to the village of Sant Llorenç d'Hortons. Both routes pass through areas surrounded by vineyards that extend for nearly two miles.
