Barcelona, a land of cycling

Get ready to enjoy road cycling just like the pros do. The first three stages of La Vuelta 23 cycling race went through some of the most spectacular areas of our regions to show the world that Barcelona is a true land of cycling. Thus, if you are a road cycling enthusiast, we encourage you to discover these amazing routes, which you can fully enjoy, as long as you are well prepared and equipped.

Stage 1 – Barcelona

The first stage of La Vuelta is a team time trial through some of the most iconic areas of the city of Barcelona. According to Tomi Misser, World, European and Spanish cycling champion, "at this stage there won't be many differences between the teams, but it does give you an idea of which team will be at the top of its game. We will also enjoy Barcelona from another point of view".

The 14.6-km time trial circuit is a route that anyone can easily do on a road bike or a city bike and which starts at Port Olímpic, next to Somorrostro Beach. From here, the route will take you around Ciutadella Park, through the Arc de Triomf and Poblenou Central Park to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Sagrada Família and La Pedrera, while finishing on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, with the mountain of Montjuïc welcoming you.

Stage 2 – Mataró -> Barcelona

The second stage, halfway up the mountain, will take the cyclists from Mataró to downtown Barcelona. According to Tomi Misser, it will be "a fun and eye-catching stage for the audience". In competitive terms, Misser assures that it will be "perfect for breakaways, as a few kilometres after the start there is the Coll d'Òrrius pass, where the breakaway will surely form, and the cyclists will have to fight to reach Montjuïc with some difference, so that they do not get caught by the group".

The route of this second day of competition is 181.3 km long and "shows some of the best places in the province of Barcelona for cycling, such as the Coll d'Òrrius pass, the Coll d'Estenalles pass, Montserrat or Montjuïc", says Misser. If you are ready and want to enjoy some of the best roads in our regions, we recommend you follow this track. The circuit starts in Argentona and will allow you to enjoy such breathtaking landscapes as those offered by the Nature Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac, will take you through villages, such as Marganell or Castellbell i el Vilar, with the mountain of Montserrat towering over them, and will finally take you to Barcelona to round off the cycling day with the views of the city from the Olympic Stadium.

Stage 3 – Súria -> Arinsal (Andorra)

The third stage, i.e. the first mountain stage, of La Vuelta starts in Súria with 158.5 km to go.
"It's shorter, but tough", says Tomi Misser. "It reaches Andorra after several first-class passes and it arrives in Arinsal after overcoming the Coll d'Ordino pass. It is a key stage for those riders who want to fight for the general classification. This will be the first test, where we will see the first differences", added the world champion.

On its brief passage through the province of Barcelona, this stage continues to provide us with memorable landscapes. If you want to enjoy a green route, the C-55 road that goes from Súria to Cardona will not leave you indifferent. Although the race runs by and continues towards Solsona, we recommend you climb to the famous Cardona Castle, one of the most impressive medieval ensembles in Catalonia. Its privileged location offers an exceptional panoramic view of the town of Cardona, as well as the Pyrenees and inland Catalonia.
