The Festa Major (Main Town Festival) in Vilafranca del Penedès, held in honour of Saint Felix is one of the most special and participatory festivals in Catalonia. Processions, parades, human tower-building, concerts, folklore… Partying, and more partying.
It’s half-past twelve at noon. The town square is full to bursting. The four best colles castelleres (human tower-building teams), including the Castellers de Vilafranca, start to assemble the most spectacular human towers of the year on the occasion of the feast day of Saint Felix of Vilafranca del Penedès. This is the main highlight of a festa major that for centuries has offered just the right combination of traditional events and events for the general public. Giants, capgrossos (papier-mâché “big heads”), devils and all sorts of traditional dances make up the programme of what is said to be the most typical festival in Catalonia.
