Sport on the beach

Besides sunbathing and lounging about on the sand, Costa Barcelona offers a wide range of activities for you to make full use of your free time. On its beaches and in its marinas, you can take part in sports like kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. And very close by, you will find excellent facilities to play football, volleyball and basketball, go swimming or do athletics. The desire to promote sport is so strong that three coastal municipalities have managed to achieve 'Sports Holiday Destination' status. Do you know which ones?

Castelldefels is one of three municipalities that have been awarded the Sports Holiday Destination seal of approval thanks to their high-quality sports facilities and amenities. The Catalonian Tourist Board particularly rated its calm water rowing and canoeing facilities and considered the Catalonian Olympic Canal a top-level location, where elite athletes and sports professionals can train and prepare themselves physically in a safe environment. And it is also available to amateurs – so grab your swimsuit and head to Castelldefels to spend the day!

Santa Susanna has also been awarded the Sports Holiday Destination certificate, of which it is justly proud. This beautiful town in the region of Maresme is delighted with the recognition it has received for its range of sporting activities, amenities and facilities and, more specifically, the efforts made by the municipality to promote cycling, dinghy sailing, football and other sports. For lovers of road cycling, the town's numerous traffic-free cycle paths are like a paradise, and mountain bike enthusiasts can enjoy many moments of sporting happiness touring the signposted trails that run through the Corredor and Montnegre mountains.

Another tourist resort in Maresme that has also obtained the SHD seal of approval is Calella – an achievement that can mainly be put down to not being afraid of big challenges. The waters of the Mediterranean and the roads of the Serralada Litoral mountain range welcome energetic athletes, many of whom are foreigners, attracted by the prestige of the half marathons and long-distance triathlons staged in this enviable corner of Costa Barcelona. Have you got what it takes to join them?

•    In the interior regions of Barcelona, there are also many activities for outdoor sports enthusiasts. You can find out about all of them on the Barcelona is much more website.
