Sant Fruitós Rice Festival
A good meal given by the rich to the poor so they could face the Lent abstinence: This is the origin of the Sant Fruitós Rice Festival.
In the past, it was called the poor people's soup and the rich paid for this meal. At the beginning of the 20th century, rice started to be introduced and the bailiff was responsible for going round the houses collecting the ingredients that each family could provide for the festival. Since the 1960s, it has been known as the Rice Festival. Up until then, it was a good carnival meal that was designed to set people up for Lent. The festival has since undergone changes, but if you go there, you are still guaranteed a substantial meal.
