Museu de les Mines de Cercs

Located in the mining colony of Sant Corneli, the Cercs Mining Museum displays the characteristics and uses of coal at the end of the 19th century, and takes us into this rough and tumble, dark world in which thousands of people worked. The museum, which forms part of the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i la Tècnica de Catalunya system, helps bring all aspects related to the extraction of coal back to life, from its origins to the last years of the 20th century. This all-inclusive journey begins with the characteristics and uses of coal, and shows what daily life was like in the colony, in the company, the workers’ homes, public education, the work of the women and the working environment. Four areas frame the visit. The permanent exhibition rooms (in the building of the former nun convent, which became the Llar del Miner), a miner’s home from the 1940s, the audiovisual room and the Sant Romà Gallery, at a depth of 500 metres under ground, can be visited by rail and shows what life and work inside the mine were like. The other point of interest at the museum focuses on the mining colony and the services and facilities surrounding it.
