Tomàs Balvey Museum-Archive

Tomàs Balvey Bas (1865-1954) came from a line of Cardedeu chemists. Besides working at the family pharmacy, he helped recover local history. The origins of the Tomàs Balvey Archival Museum (MATBC) lie in the various collections (of clothes, antique furniture, traditional tools and occupations, Catalonian ceramics, photographs, firearms, archaeological remains and architectural elements) that the chemist collected. Since 1975, the MATBC has been located in the Casal Daurella, a former summer house built in 1948. The museum's most remarkable display is of the Balvey pharmacy, which retains its original furniture from 1812 and preserves over 200 Empire-style jars with pharmaceutical products of that period. From the historical and archival collection, the set of parchments (10th-14th centuries) must be pointed out. Other sections of the museum are dedicated to ethnology, the arts, archaeology, local history and the natural sciences. Next to the exhibition rooms is the botanical garden, which contains medicinal species.
