Museu de l'Esquerda

Located in the town of les Masies de Roda, on a peninsula covering 12 hectares on cliffs overlooking a bend of the Ter River, this site is in a privileged geographical position. This is why it has been continuously settled from prehistory through to the Middle Ages. The oldest findings at this archaeological site date back to the 8th and 7th centuries B. C., with some ceramics from that period. The wall, the street that crosses it, the rooms and the two towers that flank the street are from the 5th and early 4th centuries B. C. After these areas were destroyed, the wall was rebuilt in the Iberian period (1st and 2nd centuries B. C.) at a higher site. The settlement was abandoned as of the 1st century, and there is no evidence that it was re-inhabited until the Middle Ages. It was finally destroyed in 1314 after a series of feudal battles. It was abandoned for a new settlement next to the Ter bridge as of the 13th century, which gave rise to the town of Roda de Ter. Since 1977 there have been systematic excavations carried out every year at the site by the University of Barcelona and subsidised by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, with the cooperation of the Town Council of Roda de Ter. The L'Esquerda private foundation manages the site and the workshop-laboratory, as well as the archaeological museum. A wide range of activities are performed here, from archaeological and experimental research and research on materials and restoration and cataloguing, through to promotional activities such as guided tours or conferences. The Archaeological Museum of L'Esquerda is in Roda de Ter. Its permanent exhibition is divided into five themed areas: the Iberian and medieval sites; the excavation systems that have been used; the settlement in Iberian times; the town in medieval times; and the latest technological advances that have been applied. The new seat of this museum is to be located very near the site, in the former military barracks of the Civil Guard.
