6 easy walking routes

We do not always need to climb a tall mountain or embark on a very demanding hike to find magical spots. Sometimes, the places we imagine when we think of disconnecting are closer than we think, and getting there doesn't require much effort. If you need to breathe in some fresh air but are not feeling very fit or are short on time, here are some recommendations that will leave you with no excuses. The six routes we describe below are easy, and you will need only one to three hours ahead of you to enjoy nature and some heritage sites. You will barely break a sweat!

The Church of Sant Andreu (Moianès)

Església de Sant Andreu a Castellcir, Moianès.

Hidden just over two and a half kilometres from Castellcir lies a spot that you will fall in love with. The Church of Sant Andreu is the origin of the village. Up until the 1960s, Castellcir was a scattered village full of farmhouses amidst the fields, all united around this Romanesque church. The path to get there is paved, but we recommend walking down it to the stream. Once you cross the stream, you will be a stone’s throw away from the church and have nice views of the Castellcir stream valley. An unforgettable spot!

The Beech Forest of Grevolosa (Osona)

Fageda de la Grevolosa, Sant Pere de Torelló

This is the type of forest that appears on every autumn hiking list, but the truth is that it can be enjoyed any time of the year. We suggest following the Sant Nazari and Grevolosa route, a great way to immerse yourself in this area. Use the designated parking lots to minimize your impact on this zone of great ecological value. Before reaching the beech forest, follow the trail marked with various informative panels about the local fauna and the construction of charcoal pits. After crossing the forest, you will reach the Sant Nazari hermitage, located in a very beautiful setting, against the backdrop of a beech forest and a clearing where two majestic oaks are located. After the hermitage and a good climb, you will finally arrive at the Grevolosa beech forest, one of the most majestic in Catalonia, with beech trees that exceed 30 meters in height, some over 200 years old. Walking among these ancient trees will make you feel very small, but the calm atmosphere is reassuring.

Nature route along the Cardener River (Súria, el Bages)

Riu Cardener al seu pas per Súria

This route lasts one hour and 40 minutes without stops. It's an easy and flat itinerary that can be followed thanks to the informative panels along the river. After finishing the segment that passes through the town, you will arrive at a beautiful riverside forest. The Pla de Reguant forest is one of the best groves along the Cardener River, classified as a Site of Natural Interest. Following the path through the forest, you will reach the Creu de Rosselló viewpoint. It is the highest point of the route, where the historic wayside cross is located to mark the entrance to Súria. It's located just below Shaft 4 of the Súria salt mines and is an ideal lookout to end the route as it offers views of the Old Town of Súria, the current town, and the artificial salt mountain.

Upstream and Downstream of the Llobregat (Castellar de n'Hug, el Berguedà)

Castellar de n'Hug

Just 600 meters from Castellar de n'Hug is the source of one of the most important rivers in Catalonia, the Llobregat. From the village, follow the signs and informative panels that lead you to the headwaters of the Llobregat where you will see how the water flows between the rocks and quickly transforms into small waterfalls to create the river. You will have already begun part of the GR 270 path that will take you to Pobla de Lillet along the river. This six-kilometre route can be done in a couple of hours without stopping. It is well marked and passes by various points of interest, such as the Romanesque Church of Sant Vicenç del Rus, the Cement Museum, and the Artigas Gardens.  One of the most interesting sections of the route is the Pas de l'Os, a deep gorge where the river rushes through.

Practical Information:

You can do the route on your own. However, it’s not a loop, so if you don't want to backtrack, you have the option of leaving your car in the village and hiring a transfer back to Castellar de n'Hug. You can also take the Cement Train for the last segment between the Gardens and the village, an experience we highly recommend.

Loop route in the Ges Valley (Osona)

Vidrà

To explore the surroundings of the Ges valley, we recommend this 6.5-kilometre route starting from Vidrà. In about three hours, you will discover the wonders of the region, passing through Forat Micó, a gorge between the Bellmunt and Corull mountain ranges. The first point of interest is Tosca dels Degollats, a natural water spring which, with the passage of time, has formed a natural sculpture amidst the vegetation. The path leads to the famous Molí waterfall, where a small pool forms below— a favourite summer spot. Vidrà regulates access to avoid problems with waste and misuse. This is the highlight of the route and best enjoyed responsibly. After the waterfall, you will start the return trip, first passing by the ruins of the “Old Mill” and then later the “New Mill.” The presence of the Ges River transformed this area into an ideal spot for flour mills such as these two which were used up until the early 20th century. The last point of interest before returning to Vidrà is the Salgueda Bridge, popularly known as a Romanesque site although the date of 1845 engraved in the stone suggests otherwise. Despite this, the view on the other side of the bride is worth it.

Sant Medir Hermitage and Xandri pine tree (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Vallès Occidental)

Pi d'en Xandri, a Sant Cugat del Vallès

Close to Sant Cugat, the Collserola Natural Park is an easy getaway. One option is a loop walk to Sant Medir Hermitage via the Xandri pine tree. The route starts at Sant Cugat Equestrian Centre, where you need to follow the trail to Cendrera Tower.  After passing the farmhouse, you will ascend the Torrefera hill through a dense white pine forest. After a while, you’ll reach Can Borrell, a 17th-century farmhouse. From there, you will descend along the Sant Medir stream to a small Romanesque hermitage. To return, retrace your steps to Can Borrell, then follow the stream to Xandri pine tree, a natural landmark of Sant Cugat. This monumental pine tree is more than 230 years old and stands 23 meters tall. To return to the equestrian centre, just follow the trail. In total, the 11.5-kilometre route can be completed in about three hours without stops. Congratulations!
