The Artisan Bread and Wheat Route

If you long for real bread, the kind made with artisanal methods, local flours and sourdough, we have to tell you that you can still find it in places like the Lluçanès region. This is a land with its own identity, halfway between the Plain of Vic and Berguedà. It has a dynamic farming activity where food isn’t manufactured, it’s made! The Bread and Wheat Route will delight you, whether you’re a modern foodie or getting on in years and nostalgic for the past.

The Artisan Bread and Wheat Route  is a gastronomic journey through the Lluçanès region during which you’ll see how bread is made in the traditional way. The secrets are revealed step by step, starting in the fields and ending in small bakeries with wood-fired ovens, marble counters and the characteristic aroma of fresh bread and the best craft beer.

1. The crop fields

The quality of the seed is an element that must be taken into account if you want to harvest the best cereal to make the best products. This is the reason why some farmers in Lluçanès have decided to recover historical varieties of wheat that are less productive but exceptional in terms of nutrients, flavour and digestibility. The common wheat variety grown here is an example of these ancestral cereals while Xeixa wheat is another. You can learn a lot about both at Mas Terricabras d'Oristà.

2. Can Pujals Bakery

There are many bakeries in Lluçanès that focus on artisanal bread making, but Can Pujals Bakery in Sant Boi de Lluçanès is special. Also known as Cal Sendu, the two brothers who run it work with the local common wheat flour, allow long fermentations and bake the bread slowly in a wood-burning oven in the Moorish style; that is, in the same place where the fire was previously made. A unique rarity in the region well worth knowing about!

3. Sant Adjuntori Bakery

Enjoy a visit to this family-run wood-fired oven of Olost, with a long history that maintains its essence now in the fifth generation of bakers. You’ll be able to learn how the oven works and see how common wheat bread is made, as well as taste bread with the texture and aroma of the old days.

4. Kibus Beers

Visit this craft beer brewery where you can learn about the natural and traditional beer making process that achieves a quality product with unique aromas and flavours. You can taste the beers made with local common wheat and hops.
