The most legendary peaks

Reaching the top of a mountain always conveys a sense of accomplishment, of crossing the finish line or of achieving a goal. If that peak is also the highest in a region, one of the most beloved or one whose name is associated with legends or historical moments, then these feelings are even greater. Below we have compiled what we consider to be the most legendary peaks in the regions of Barcelona, all of which are worth visiting and attempting to climb.

Pedraforca

When it comes to iconic mountains, Pedraforca undoubtedly tops the list. It is the second highest peak in the Barcelona area, at 2,506.4 m. What makes it attractive is not so much its height, which is also impressive, but above all its unusual shape, with its two peaks and the saddle, as well as the fact that it is not part of any mountain range, as it rises majestically from the landscape. There are several routes to climb it, but bear in mind that you need to be reasonably fit.

The four peaks of Montseny

Some say the most legendary peak in Montseny is Matagalls, others say that is nonsense, that it is Turó de l'Home (1,706 m), which is why it is the highest; some have a special soft spot for the Agudes; and still others prefer Turó de Tagamanent, which, despite being considerably lower than the previous peaks (1,056 m), was crowned by a castle in 945, where the Romanesque church of Santa Maria now stands. We will be even-handed and say that each one has its own appeal and that it is quite an experience to venture into and reach the summit of each one, as thousands of hikers have done in this hiking paradise: the Montseny Nature Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Sant Jeroni

Montserrat is a legendary mountain, but its highest peak is Sant Jeroni, at 1,236 m, where three regions meet: Anoia, Bages and Baix Llobregat. Several years ago, it was easier to reach the top thanks to the dizzying aerial funicular that climbed up the wall of the Serrat del Moro mountain range; at present, you have to walk from the monastery esplanade, with hundreds of steps and some steep slopes ahead.

La Mola

This is the highest mountain in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Nature Park, at 1,102 m, as well as the site of the Romanesque monastery of Sant Llorenç. Its cliffs give it a unique appearance, and along the way you will find stunning formations, such as the Cavall Bernat monolith. The climb is not particularly difficult, especially considering that you can reach an altitude of 800 m by motor vehicle. La Mola shares the limelight in the Nature Park with Montcau, which is not much lower (1,056 m).

  • In the Berguedà region, beyond Pedraforca, there are many other peaks that exceed 2,000 m: Puigllançada, Cap de la Gallina Pelada, Cap d'Urdet, Penyes Altes de Moixeró, etc.
  • During our visit to this natural environment, let us take care of the surroundings and behave responsibly. Nature parks are great, but let us enjoy them with civility.
