Noti

The building housing this restaurant, right in the centre of Barcelona, won the Architecture FAD award in 1965. All the city and country's news used to go down here as it was the headquarters for the Noticiero Universal newspaper. The Note restaurant maintained the name from back in the day although now there are no more typewriters or even any journalists working here but high quality kitchen equipment and waiters serving guests in a designer atmosphere. The restaurant consists of a single square space decorated in red, black and golden tones. This gives functional luxury and a glamorous atmosphere with cosmopolitan and New York touches. Maybe it is influenced by the story of its chef, Fernando Pavón, a Mexican trained in many restaurants in NYC and others closer to home such as the Hotel Arts and Arzak. Its dishes mix market cuisine with creative and original touches, oriental influences and a great deal of imagination. The result is a high quality menu that varies according to the seasonal dishes although some have earned the right to be a permanent fixture. These dishes include terrine of foie with caramelised fruit, carré of lamb with couscous and aroma of cinnamon or tuna sashimi with mango. To begin with, it offers starters such as the marinated sardine and goat's cheese pastry; tuna stew; coconut, ginger, citronella and mango broth; frozen gazpacho of tomato and cherries with diced cucumber, red pepper, crunchy Parmesan and pistachios; or the classic acorn-fed cured ham with tomato toast. The fresh fish bought from the Boquería market is cooked on the Note's grill with baby carrots and lemon butter, in addition to others such as fresh sole with hazelnut and caper butter, lime and confit rata potatoes. As for meat, quality is prioritised with suggestions such as medallion of lamb loin with gravy plus confit garlic and pressed aubergine, tartar of beef steak with pont-neuf potatoes and Russian salad or chicken curry with coconut milk, basmati rice, mango and apple chutney, if you fancy something a little more exotic. If you go in the evening, there's nothing better than trying one of their famous mixed drinks, before or after your meal, in the restaurant area known as the Good Bar. It's a real lesson on great bar style.
