Jean Leon

Jean Leon is a legendary name in the world of Penedès wines. A pioneering winery since its establishment in 1963, it gained renown on account of its Clos wines and its cultivation of noble grape varieties. In fact, Jean Leon produced the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines in Spain. The origins of the winery are very unusual and connected to the life of Ceferino Carrión, a man from Santander who, when he was nineteen, emigrated to the United States as a stowaway on a merchant ship. He arrived to New York poor, and later struck it rich in Hollywood thanks to a job as a waiter in a restaurant owned by Frank Sinatra.Carrión then changed his name to Jean Leon and met many rising stars such as James Dean, with whom he opened a unique, very personal restaurant: La Scala. Opened in 1956 in Beverly Hills, it soon became a meeting place for the famous actors and politicians.Jean Leon wanted to create a winery that would provide the most exquisite wines for the demanding palates of his distinguished customers and found the ideal place in the region of Penedès: 150 hectares which he replanted with grafts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay bought from the best French wineries.Ever since, the limited-production Jean Leon wines are defined by their elegance and refinement. In 1994, the Torres family, bound by close ties of friendship to Jean Leon, bought the vineyards and the cellar, taking over the project without changing its direction. The Jean Leon Visitor's Centre, created in 2002, provides guests with a highly interesting visit and tour of this winery in Torrelavit. The visit begins with a video presentation of Jean Leon's life and the origins of the winery. Guests then go to the Jean Leon gallery/museum, which features mementos of Jean Leon's life. Guests can also visit the vinification room and ageing cellars. The tour ends with a sampling of some of the firm's products. Also, the different vineyard plots that make up the estate are criss-crossed by marked paths, providing guests with the opportunity to take a serene stroll.
