Peas

#
Peas (Pisum sativum) are from a plant in the leguminous plant family the seed of which is edible. It has been grown in Europe for more than 5,000 years and its green and tender seeds have made them into one of the most popular vegetables. In Catalonia, peas from El Maresme, the garrofal variety, are held in high regard. In the area they are also known as Llavaneres peas thanks to their excellent quality which is achieved by virtue of the local climatic conditions. The peas can be eaten on their own or as an accompaniment. Lovers of these vegetables can take part in the Pineda de Mar Spring Cuisine Day Events (Maresme), which are held from May 16 to June 7. During these events local restaurants serve dishes made with typical local produce amongst which are, of course, peas which are so abundant at this time of year. One of the star dishes made with this vegetable are sautéed peas.
