Penedès Muscovy duck

The Muscovy duck of el Penedès is one of the most highly regarded products from this area due to its less fatty meat. These birds, which are black in colour with a white plumage, have been bred in the rural areas surrounding Vilafranca del Penedès since the 16th century. In the 1990s, breeding of this species increased and is now concentrated in poultry yards. To make the meat more consistent, the ducks must eat a diet of 70% grain or derivatives and are slaughtered at twenty weeks.
