Gramona

In 1913, Pilar, the daughter of the Batlle family, married Bartolomé Gramona, son of the president of the Barcelona Tavern Keepers Guild, co-founder of the magazine La Vid Catalana, or 'Catalan Vines', and owner of a wine warehouse in his native Sant Sadurní. The family began making their first cavas on Indústria Street, where the bottles are still aged. Today, the company is run by the fifth generation of the family, with Jaume and Xavier Gramona at the helm. Both supervised the construction of a new cellar west of town with futuristic lines and equipped with cutting-edge technology. It is embedded in a hill and sits below one of the family's vineyards. In the vicinity of the new cellar, Gramona has some of the plots of land which make up the forty hectares of vineyard it owns. Together with some sixty additional hectares belonging to other owners, these vineyards supply all the Xarel·lo, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Macabeo variety grapes the winery uses primarily for producing the one million bottles of wine and cava it sells a year.Complete visits to Gramona begin at the main facility on Indústria Street. Guests then head over to the new cellar on the outskirts of Sant Sadurní.Returning to the traditional installations on Indústria Street, guests now venture down into the cellars where Gramona products undergo the longest ageing process on the market. Ageing takes places for an average of four years, always with the traditional cork stopper and clip, instead of the more modern crown capper. The traditional process includes manual disgorging.
