Montserrat

Montserrat is a mountainous massif situated between the regions of Anoia, Baix Llobregat and Bages. It is made up mostly of conglomerate rock, which was formed about 55 million years ago from the pebbles and sediments of a mighty river flowing from the ancient Catalan-Balearic massif. Montserrat, therefore, was originally a delta. Its natural heritage is composed of an interesting combination of Mediterranean forests and species adapted to the rocky locations.

Montserrat is home to the famous Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria, founded in 1025 by Abbot Oliba. Legend has it that the image of Our Lady of Montserrat, the popular Moreneta, was found by shepherds inside a cave around the year 880.
