Infallible Sitges
Sitges is a destination that will never let you down. It doesn’t matter whether you’re visiting with friends, your partner or the whole family… You won’t be able to complete the long list of interesting activities on offer in this ancient fishing village. Here are four infallible plans with something to suit everyone. Let the fun begin!
1. A day on the beach
If going to the beach is your thing, Sitges is the place to be. There are 26 beaches to choose from, ranging from secluded coves that are havens for naturists to sandy beaches in the town centre with plenty of services. And you don’t have to worry too much about the weather either: with 320 days of sun per year, you’re unlikely to end up with a cold and cloudy day!
2. An afternoon in the old quarter
One of the other main attractions of Sitges is its old quarter. We recommend visiting in the afternoon/early evening when the shops are still open, to get a taste of the town’s commercial and maritime character. Visit the ruins of the mediaeval wall, the fishermen’s district, the town hall, the steps down from the church, the historical old market… And, if you’ve got enough time, pay a visit to Cau Ferrat (the house-workshop of the painter Santiago Rusiñol) and to the Maricel Museum, an art centre with a superb collection.
3. An evening of intense flavours
Feeling hungry? You’re spoilt for choice in Sitges! If you visit in the winter, step into one of the wine bars in the town centre and enjoy a tapa of xató salad with a nice glass of Designation of Origin (DO) Penedès wine. In the summer, head to one of the restaurants on the seafront and ask for a sitgetana style rice casserole, a local delicacy combining meat and fish. And at any time of year, quench your thirst with a sip of malvasia sweet wine. Don’t forget that the founder of this renowned international brand was born in Sitges at the turn of the 19th century.
4. Sunrise
Is sunrise your favourite time of day? Take the GR-92 footpath between Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú! The route includes long stretches around the coastline, offering you spectacular views of cliffs, coves and hidden corners of breathtaking charm.
