Holidaying Local
Estiueig de proximitat, 1850-1950 (Holidaying Local, 1850-1950) is an invitation to reimagine the landscape of the present-day surroundings of the city of Barcelona by following in the footsteps of the holidaymakers of the past at the seaside and in the mountains.
The exhibition offers visitors an overview of a special social phenomenon: the summer holidays taken by the bourgeoisie in the area surrounding the city of Barcelona in the period between 1850 and 1950. It describes who the holidaymakers were, how they travelled, where they stayed, what they were seeking and how they socialised, with the ultimate goal of reflecting on the present and future of the rich heritage they left behind: garden cities, mansions, gardens, fountains, spas, social clubs and grand old hotels.
