Five autumn landscapes
Autumn. The cool air begins to fill the environment and the light fades earlier each day. These are the days when many trees shed their leaves or their tops are tinged with ochre and red. This is undoubtedly a remarkable time to visit the forests, not only to collect mushrooms, but also to fully enjoy a captivating landscape with unbeatable colours. Here are five of these fantastic places in the regions of Barcelona.
1. Serra del Catllaràs
The dense forests of the Catllaràs mountain range, located in the north of the Berguedà region, with Scots pine, holm oak, oak and beech trees, are particularly beautiful between September and December. The Espinedes beech forest boasts centuries-old trees over 30 metres tall and is perhaps the most rustic spot in the mountain range. You can take a trail, on foot or by mountain bike, tour between La Nou de Berguedà and Malanyeu to explore part of the forest and enjoy breathtaking views.
2. Grevolosa Beech Forest
Beech forests are at their most attractive in autumn, and the Grevolosa forest is no exception. It is located in the Llancers mountain range, between the regions of Osona and La Garrotxa. There are trees over 40 metres tall and 1 metre in diameter, and if you want to experience the word “calm” actually means, this is the place for you!
3. The Ter Rier at Les Masies de Voltregà
However, it is not just the trees and forests that change in autumn. It is also a great season, if there is plenty of rain, to see the rivers come alive and watch the birds begin to fly south to warmer lands. Thus, we recommend a walk along the banks of the Ter River as it flows through Les Masies de Voltregà, where you can also discover some of the river's meanders and the islands of Gambires and Gallifa.
4. Wine tours in Subirats
If we have not yet ventured too far into autumn, we are sure to still be able to see the vines with their shiny grapes ready to be harvested. In Subirats, the municipality in the Alt Penedès region with the largest area used for growing grapes for wine and cava production, you will find nine routes covering a total of 34 kilometres, signposted with information panels about grape varieties, farming techniques and the climate. They are suitable for walking, cycling or horseback riding.
5. Montseny
If the Montseny Nature Park is gorgeous at any time of year, in autumn the variety of its flora turns it into a visually stunning display. It does not matter whether you hike around Fontmartina or Viladrau, walk near the Santa Fe reservoir or climb up Matagalls. You will find everything you learned in school about nature and autumn right there in Montseny.
Did you know you can visit the park without smoke, petrol, parking issues or traffic jams? Visit the park with the shuttle bus service and engage in sustainable tourism.
