Vilanova i la Geltrú Carnival
The Vilanova i la Geltrú Carnival offers something different every year, but it preserves the traditional elements that have characterised it for the last 300 years.
In Vilanova i la Geltrú, carnival lasts for a full week. It starts on Fat Thursday, but things really get going with the eagerly awaited Arrival of His Majesty King Carnestoltes on the Friday. He makes his first appearance at some unconventional site in the city (which changes from year to year), from where he leads a parade of floats. When the parade reaches Plaça de la Vila (the main square), he gives the “Sermon”, which marks the start of a fun-packed festival that lasts until Ash Wednesday. So, if you’re planning on heading there, you’ve been warned: make sure you have plenty of energy!
