Festa Major d'Igualada

Festa Major (Main Town Festival) of Igualada

The Festa Major (Main Festival) of Igualada is one of the most ancient in Catalonia. Experience the tradition of Saint Bartholomew’s feast day!

Mentioned in records dating all the way back to 1388, the Festa Major (Main Town Festival) of Igualada is one of the oldest in Catalonia. It is celebrated in honour of Sant Bartomeu (Saint Bartholomew), the city’s patron saint, who is still the star of a procession. It has all the ingredients of a traditional town festival: gegants (giants), capgrossos (figures with papier-mâché “bigheads”), a correfoc (which involves people dressed as devils running through the streets and letting off fireworks) and castells (human towers). Don’t miss the dance of the Cercolets (hoops), typical of winegrowing areas, which Igualada revived a few years ago.
