The benefits of hot springs

Relaxation, unwinding and calm. If you need to hear these three words as much as you need to drink water, we have the perfect formula for you. Or rather, we have the water that heals. The regions around Barcelona are home to thermal treasures with incredible benefits that will help you unwind like never before, while nourishing your body with the finest minerals and helping it relax from the hectic pace of everyday life.

Termes Victoria

Near the Font del Lleó Square in Caldes de Montbui, where thermal water springs forth at 74°C (the hottest spring in the whole of Spain!), you will find the Termes Victoria Spa. With over 300 years of history, you can enjoy the mineral wealth of its waters. You can do so in its classic spa, which offers all kinds of treatments for the recovery from conditions such as osteoarthritis and arthritis, as well as persistent Covid, thanks to a groundbreaking study with the Hospital del Mar. You can also immerse yourself in the waters of Espai CEL, a recreational thermal centre built on the site of the old thermal reservoirs that were used to cool the water in the 18th century. A privileged historical setting with seven pools that convey different sensations and temperatures and will take you directly to a paradise of relaxation.

Broquetas Spa

Across from Font del Lleó Square and right in front of the old Roman baths of Caldes (make sure you do not miss them!), you will find another spa where you can relax. The history of the Broquetas Spa dates back to 1729, when the town's apothecary, Salvador Broquetas, founded a bathhouse, in order to take advantage of the benefits of the hot waters, which are very relaxing thanks to their high chlorine, sodium and lithium content and are hence ideal for muscle and joint pain, skin problems and respiratory issues. Its indoor spaces are a feast for the eyes, as they still feature an authentic 2nd-century Roman sauna, a steam room and gorgeous Art Nouveau tiles. Are you ready to sit inside a natural stone oven covered with a vaulted ceiling, just like the Romans did?

Termes la Garriga

The other spa town in the Vallès Oriental region is La Garriga, and one of its spas is Termes la Garriga, which is located in a beautiful Art Nouveau building. As soon as you enter, you will be overwhelmed by the peace and calm that surrounds you. Bathe in its waters and you will feel their sedative and analgesic effects, which are ideal for combating stress, thanks to the sulphates and chlorides its alkaline, hypothermal waters of magmatic origin contain. The indoor pool is wonderful, but do not miss the outdoor pool, as you will fall completely in love with it. Once you have relaxed enough, make the most of your stay in La Garriga to take a stroll along the promenade and discover the Illa Raspall block, home to four Art Nouveau gems declared Cultural Assets of National Interest.

Blancafort Spa Hotel

Originating in the first bathhouse in La Garriga, “El Blancafort”, as it is known in the town, has been in operation since 1840. It boasts of having hosted celebrities such as Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer, Eugeni d'Ors and Enric Prat de la Riba, although the fame of its waters dates back to the Bronze Age, when it was a place of worship, and also to Roman times, when it began to be used for medicinal purposes. The thermal water of La Garriga is rich in bicarbonate, chloride and sodium, which provide it with mineral-medicinal properties that are highly beneficial for the skin, musculoskeletal system, nervous system and blood circulation. You will now find a fully refurbished centre that embraces the tradition of this historic spa as well as the latest innovations in mineral-medicinal treatments. If you choose to bathe in its waters, relaxation is guaranteed.

Termes Titus

If you like both the sea and calm, the Titus Spa is the place for you. Located in Arenys de Mar, just 50 metres from the Mediterranean, it is the closest Catalan spa to the coast. It was founded more than 200 years ago as “Banys d'en Titus” (Baths of Titus) after the discovery of a thermal spring with mineral-medicinal waters found in the living rock. Sodium chloride waters are particularly recommended for treating rheumatism and osteoarticular diseases. When you arrive, take a look at the planters at the entrance, which are the old thermal pools. Once inside, indulge in one of their treatments and enjoy breathtaking coastal views from the outdoor thermal pool.
