Can Culleretes

Founded in 1786, it is said to be the oldest restaurant in Barcelona. Over time, it has become one of the classic gastro haunts of the Catalan capital. Its name is linked to a funny anecdote explaining that the waiters used to ask for teaspoons (culleretes) for the coffee. Three generations are currently running this place whose walls, hung with paintings from 1900, holding many memories. It has spacious dining rooms to enjoy its classic Catalan cuisine, from traditional cannelloni to the Catalan escudella (broth), including oven-baked gilt-head bream, hunter-style partridge or wild boar stew. Other dishes include spinach cannelloni with brandade of cod, scrambled egg with asparagus and prawns, saffron milk cap mushroom cake, hake in crab sauce, oven-roasted lamb, pig's feet in cava or cod au gratin with alioli. One of their recommendations is the pica-pica of fish and seafood, a complete menu made up of three dishes: steamed mussels and cockles and prawns with garlic, variety of fish and seafood fritters (squid, monkfish and shrimp) and a mixed grill (half a lobster, Dublin Bay prawns, crayfish and squid). Its traditional desserts are all homemade, such as sponge cake with hot chocolate, selection of creme caramels, cheesecake with raspberry sauce, crema catalana or coconut and banana flan with pineapple sauce. The wine list includes about forty wines from the main Catalan and Spanish denominations of origin, particularly from la Rioja. It has lounges for groups and it is fitted out for people with reduced mobility.
