Terrassa Museum-Casa Alegre de Sagrera

The Alegre de Sagrera house was erected on land bought by Anton Sagrera in 1768. His descendent, Joaquim de Sagrera, renowned producer of textiles in Terrassa at the time, had it built at the beginning of the 19th century. At the end of the century, the heiress to the family of Mercedes de Sagrera married the local oligarch Francisco Alegre Roig. She provided the couple with a house that had been battered in the invasion of the Napoleonic troops. In 1991, the municipal architect Melcior Viñals led its renovation, giving it a vaguely Modernist style that has shaped its current physiognomy. The textile crisis of the 1960s led to the Alegre factory being shut down. The family gradually fell on hard times, leading Antonio de Sagrera to consider tearing down his mansion, but in the end it was acquired by the Town Council in 1973. The house is now a model for an industrial bourgeoisie home of the period, retaining many of its original furnishings. The current façade, on Font Vella street, has Modernist balconies of cast iron on the first floor and gallery windows on the second, a design attributed to Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Alexandre de Riquer made the relief of the façade and the ornamental ceiling in the dining room. The main room, with murals by Pere Viver, opens to the gallery that faces the patio, decorated with stained glass in Modernist style. The French-style garden is accessed on Cardaire street. The Alegre de Sagrera house furthermore displays various art collections from the municipal museum collection, with works by the painters Fèlix Mestres, Laureà Barrau, Josep Martínez Lozano and Baca Flor. On display is also the Salvans de cerámica i porcelana oriental collection, and legacies from the writers Agustí Bartra and Ferran Canyameres, and by the draftsman Mateu Avellaneda, among others.
