Museu de Sant Boi de Llobregat

With the purpose of promoting and preserving the local historical and cultural heritage, the main seat of the Sant Boi de Llobregat Museum is in two of the town's most emblematic buildings, Can Torrents and the Roman thermal baths. Can Torrents is a stately house built in the 16th century that has preserved a large part of its original structure, dating back to Roman times. The Town Council acquired it in 1996. Prior to its current use, it served a variety of functions, such as holding the museum's building services, serving as an exhibition room, and housing the Municipal Historical Archive. The Sant Boi Roman thermal baths are the most well-preserved example of this type of construction in Catalonia. They were built in the 2nd century and in operation for more than 300 years. The complex consisted of two parallel buildings: one housed the cold chambers (the dressing room, the frigidarium and the cella piscinalis) and the other the hot chambers (the tepid chamber, the steam room and the hot bath chamber). A 1st-century B.C. amphora production facility was also discovered under the frigidarium.Other places making up this local museum complex are the Can Diví archaeological site and the Benviure defensive tower. At the former the remains of an arch from one of the entrance gates to the town as well as an ancient wall front can be seen. Recent excavation has also discovered many architectural remnants from the Middle Ages. The Benviure, or Joan I tower, has a circular layout and is of Romanesque origin. The museum also has an auxiliary library, a newspaper library and various graphics sets, as well as a gift shop with publications and gifts. The Can Barraquer manor, where the politician Rafael de Casanovas lived and died, is being refurbished and will soon be the new seat of the town's museum complex.
