5 literary routes
Some of the best writers and poets of Catalan literature were born, lived or died in the regions around Barcelona, and they admired its corners so much that they ended up immortalising them in their works. Natural landscapes, haunted houses, open-air markets and cobbled streets you can now explore thanks to the well-signposted literary routes. Are you ready for an unforgettable tourist experience?
1. Verdaguer Route in Folgueroles
The Verdaguer Route to Folgueroles will take you to the places where the poet and priest who revolutionised Catalan literature spent his childhood and youth. The route can be done with a guide or on your own and includes the Damunt hermitage, the Brins d’Espígol garden, the Bosc de les Alzines Sureres (cork oak forest), the Font Trobada area and the Casa Museu, the family home of Father Cinto.
2. Rusiñol Route in Sitges
Cau Ferrat, Santiago Rusiñol’s residence in Sitges, is the epicentre of a tour of the main locations where Catalan Modernisme was born. A writer, playwright, journalist, painter and collector, Rusiñol attracted many intellectuals and artists to the town, and together they left an impressive architectural, literary and aesthetic legacy.
You can also visit Sitges via a podcast. Sitges de novel·la (Sitges straight out of a novel) is a literary route through the town based on five contemporary novels.
3. Espriu Route in Arenys de Mar
Salvador Espriu lived in Santa Coloma de Farners, Viladrau and Barcelona, but nowhere did he feel as comfortable as in Arenys de Mar, the town where his ancestors came from and where he used to spend the summer with his family. In fact, his connection with this seaside town was so strong that he created the universe of Sinera (Arenys spelled backwards) to evoke the myth of paradise lost in his poetry and plays. You can explore this myth thanks to a route that starts at the Espriu family’s holiday home and ends at the cemetery where the author is buried, a quiet, secluded spot with breathtaking views.
4. Martí i Pol Route in Roda de Ter
In Roda de Ter, the Miquel Martí i Pol Literary Route takes you to some of the most important places in the life of this prose writer, translator and poet: the house where he was born, the schools where he studied, the textile factory where he worked, as well as the library, a very special building, where you can browse through his complete works..
5. Anglada Route in Vic
The writer Maria Àngels Anglada idolised the Empordà region and Greece, but these intense loves never made her forget Vic, the city where she was born in the old Casa Fontcuberta. To honour the author who has contributed the most to making the capital of Osona famous, the local tourist office promotes a route through the main settings that appear in her poems and novels: the Plaça Major (main square), the market, Riera street, the old seminary, the Casa de l’Heura, etc. Do not miss the opportunity to delve into the three-dimensional universe of a writer who loved stories that were complex in substance, but simple in appearance.
- Did you know that Montserrat is home to the oldest publishing house in the world? A printing press was installed there in 1498, and since then there has been virtually uninterrupted cultural activity.
- In the city of Barcelona, you can also find several literary routes dedicated to the life and work of authors, such as Mercè Rodoreda, George Orwell and Gabriel García Márquez, as well as tours based on internationally renowned bestsellers, such as Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones or The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
