Els Quatre Gats

Els Quatre Gats opened in 1897, in a Modernist building, designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch. Its clientèle included painters, architects, musicians and writers from the period. It later became the headquarters for the Sant Lluc Artist's Society until 1936. Years later, it recovered its essence as a cultural place that also produces great food. So in 1989, the spirit of the former establishment returned and it opened as a café-restaurant. Its dishes include tasty starters such as Galician octopus in the traditional way, grilled Palamós prawns, escalibada grilled vegetable millefeuille, la Escala salad and olive selection, salad with crunchy goat's cheese, ganxet green beans and tapenade, giant spinach and cottage cheese ravioli, cream of leek and courgette with two caviars or rice stew with lobster, among others. There is a choice of meat or fish for main course. Meats include the char-grilled veal fillet with carpaccio of summer truffle and ceps, the roast Penedès Catalan-style chicken or the oven-roasted kid. Fish dishes are given a particular importance. You can choose from monkfish stew or monkfish tail with burnt garlic, oven-baked Mediterranean sea bass, grilled beach-caught sole with steamed baby vegetables and potato foam, plus surf and turf dishes such as Iberian pork cheeks with crayfish. There is a variety of desserts: crema catalana, cannelloni of fresh pineapple with San José cream and white chocolate sauce, tarte tatin with cinnamon creme caramel and the crunchy hazelnut parfait with Arabic coffee sauce. It has a great selection of Spanish wines with the best denominations of origin to choose from among whites, reds and rosés. The décor continues modernist lines on the walls, doors and floor. The walls are lined with photos of famous people who have visited the restaurant. The dining room is graced with a grand piano as a nod to its musical associations. They also put on exhibitions and other cultural activities, turning Els Quatre Gats into one of Barcelona's most emblematic places.
