Celler Vega de Ribes

Vega de Ribes benefits from a tradition of sixteen generations, documented since 1540, of the Bartra i Roig family's caring for vineyards and making wine. The ancestral house, the La Serra farmhouse, was built in 12th century and features a watchtower used for defence purpose between the 16th and 19th centuries and later attached to the house, which has undergone many expansions and restorations over the years. Noteworthy among the renovations is the so-called new cellar, built in 1766.In 1991, they started to bottle wine and market it under their own brand, and in 2002 they attached a new building to the cellar with offices and a large room available for celebrations. The philosophy of the winery's young owners is in line with organic vine growing criteria, certified by the Catalan Council of Ecological Production (CCPAE), throughout the entire production process, from the vineyard to the bottle. This also holds true for the woods and carob trees and other crops they grow on an estate where urban development is fierce, surrounded as it is by tourist enclaves such as Sant Pere de Ribes, Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú and by the C-32 highway which runs past the vineyards. The vines take up a total of 30 hectares with more than a dozen varieties, both international and indigenous (red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta and Sumoll and white varieties Xarel·lo, Sauvignon Blanc, Macabeo, Muscat de Frotignan, Muscat of Alexandria, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía de Sitges). Currently, they sell about 25,000 bottles a year. The range is made up entirely of bottle-aged single varietal wines . Sasserra, the first dry wine produced with the rare variety Malvasía de Sitges, stands out. This is the product guests can taste on oenotourism visits to the winery, which include a tour of the cellar and vineyards and other group activities.
