Barcelona is sea. It’s mountains. It’s urban. It’s rural. It’s wine tourism. It’s gastronomy. It’s sport. It’s history. It’s art. It’s culture. It’s architecture. It’s many things at the same time. So many that it has more than 300 municipalities and 12 regions to explore.
What to see
The recognition of Barcelona as World Capital of Architecture for 2026 provides an opportunity to look beyond the urban area. The province of Barcelona has historically been a breeding ground for architectural innovation, with works that have defined the evolution of modern architecture from the mid-20th century to the present day: from the Mediterranean sensibility of Coderch i Bonet to the boldness of Bofill and the poetics of Miralles i Pinós, modern architecture has left a profound and transformative mark on this region.
Did you know that one of Antoni Gaudí's lesser-known works of artis hidden in Berguedà? They already knew in La Pobla de Lillet – it had always been discussed among the residents, and the experts suspected it. But it wasn't until 2026 that the Gaudí Chair at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia definitively certified it as a work by Gaudí.
